Some would think that the New York Public Library is only for New Yorkers and that it is like a regular library (and it is). Those people would be wrong.
The great secret to the NYPL is that anyone can get a library card. Of course, the caveat is that you must get yourself to the library, ask for a card, and produce identification with an address. That is it. The limitation is that it is only good for three months before you have to return in person to renew it.
But while you have it let me tell you what a great thing it is for a wine writer: the databases!!! The databases available thru the library are the kind of things that you would have to pay for or belong to an academic institution in order to have access.
Not all of the databases are available online remotely. Some are only available at the library. You can also create accounts within databases as well as print or send yourself emails with links.
If you are having trouble finding something there are librarians available to help you. The general librarians will also (if necessary) send you to more specialized librarians to help you find what you need.
You want to know what wine writing might have been happening in The New Yorker in 1945? What was the advertising like in The New York Times in the spring of 1952? There is an extensive menu collection available online.
Although you might think that you would go to the main library with the lions out front but no. Go diagonally across the street to the Stavros Niarchos at the corner of 40th and 5th. If you need a break from the crowd take the elevator up to the top floor and there is a lovely terrace with chairs. It is quiet and you can look out towards the main library and other points.
