Palomino/Albariza

To meet winemakers whose wines I have loved, whose wines I have wanted to taste, and to get a chance to hang out is indeed priceless. Feria en Rama is a celebration of the wines of the Jerez area. Yes, that includes sherry. And if you haven’t had sherry lately, you should taste the revolution that is happening.

I volunteered to help out at the Feria and found myself in a group of people who love the wines of Andalucia and the people who make them.

Events like this bridge the gap between the message the wine conveys and the territory it comes from.

The event was also a chance to see history in the making. The white wines of the Jerez region grow in a soil called Albariza. These wines have been called Vinos de Pasto but a new qualification is being worked on that will give these wines the designation Vinos de Albariza.

So if you visit southern Spain and only visit Granada and Sevilla you will miss out on the new world of wine happening in places like Jerez, Sanlucar de Barrameda, Puerto de Santa Maria and the rest of the places that make create magic from the Palomino grape in the Albariza. And yes, the last image is of a Pedro Ximénez wine but everyone needs a little sweetness in life.
